Help Stop Child Slavery in Ghana

Every child deserves a chance

Joao Silva for The New York Times

My name is Jacob. I am the creator of this website and I was 9 years old at the time that I first published it. My school was raising money to free child slaves in Ghana, Africa. I started to think about how I could help and decided to create this website to raise even more money.

I would like you to donate money because what is happening is horrible. There are children at the age of six being sold for as little as200,000 cedis (about 25$). Most of the time children are being forced to swim for the first time without being taught. They are forced to swim to the bottom of the lake and to pull nets caught on buried tree stumps.  Some of the children drown and others freeze to death because the water is so cold.  Sometimes they survive but they are still taken from their families at an extremely young age.

My school helped many families with this campaign. Even though the school effort stoped last year, I am still hoping to continue helping many, many more families. While It may cost a fair sum of money to help, any amount of money will do.
I understand that some people are concerned that donation money goes to the fishermen. That is actually false. The USAIM are giving money to the families so that they do not have to sell their children. I think most people would agree that child slavery is wrong. We should do everything in our power to help these people.

A word about monies from Jacob's dad
100pct of any monies we collect are passed directly to the USAIM without any deduction. We have recently removed the paypal buttons as we were being charged by paypal and the funds ran through our company books. It was simply too messy. We now ask that you donate directly at the USAIM website by following this link https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=22226 . If you know Jacob, please indicate that a copy be sent to his email.

An additional word about the cause. This first came to our attention with the New York Times article
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/29/world/africa/29ghana.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5088&en=5648b65a82faf3e1&ex=1319778000&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
It reminded us of how fortunate we are and that life can be  valued so differently elsewhere. This same article inspired others, including the Copes, who had lost a son and found renewed meaning in their lives from charity

It also inspired Oprah, and in turn our school. Yesterday I heard the announcement over the school loudspeaker of the money raised to date and the corresponding freedoms purchased. All  of the kids cheered, for they are truly invested in the cause and relating to the stark contrast of their good fortune.

There are others who disagree with the term slavery and believe that this is a cultural issue. In the interest of full disclosure:
